Offer Description Introduction to the Institute:
The French Institute for Demographic Studies (INED) is a Public Scientific and Technical Research Establishment (EPST). Its missions include conducting research on various demographic issues (fertility and family, health and mortality, migration, etc.) and keeping the general public and the research world informed about trends and developments. INED employs around 240 people (permanent staff, doctoral students, contractors, etc.) and hosts a number of associate researchers and visiting researchers. INED forms the hub of a network of national and international research partnerships.
About the project:
The Economic Demography research unit (UR9) is coordinating and contributing to various research projects on housing conditions, the determinants of residential mobility, and the geographical and financial accessibility of accommodation facilities for people of all ages with disabilities.
The KAPPA project (Conditions of access to public policies and support services on autonomy, 2023-2027), coordinated by INED and awarded funding under the 2022 "Autonomy" Priority Research Programme (PPR), aims to explore the origins, implications, and future development of the age-segmentation of public policies on autonomy, based on a comparative analysis of policies relating to disabilities and policies on old age and loss of autonomy. The successful applicant will be working on research exploring the residential mobility of people with disabilities.
As part of the ANR EQUIDEC-2 Project (Geographical equity of decentralized policies: theory and application in support of dependent older adults, 2025-2029), the unit will be exploring disparities in the accessibility of nursing homes (EHPAD).
The HILAUSENIORS Project (awarded funding under the 2023 "Autonomy" PPR) aims to study trends in autonomy among people aged 75 and over, based on housing type (ordinary home and intermediate housing/assisted living) and the determinants of residential mobility.
These three projects are all based on the use of quantitative data, particularly administrative data.
Role and Responsibilities The successful applicant will work under the joint supervision of Roméo Fontaine (researcher, economist, INED) and Carole Bonnet (Research Director, economist, INED).
The primary responsibility of the post-doctoral researcher will be to conduct econometric analyses on the determinants of residential mobility of people with disabilities or loss of autonomy, whether these determinants are financial, family-related, or health-related. The objective is to answer several questions on i) the locations and types of housing in which the baby-boom generations are going to grow old, paying particularly attention to admissions to care homes, ii) how state coverage of the expenses associated with independent living assistance impacts residential trajectories, and lastly, iii) the social differences in residential choices within a particular local context, including by age. This work will primarily be done using the Permanent Demographic Sample (EDP) initially, and subsequently using the EDP-Santé. Other sources may also be used, such as Fideli and data from DREES.
Most of the research work undertaken by the post-doctoral researcher will be for the KAPPA project. They will also be involved in the unit's work on constructing indicators of nursing home and care service accessibility (EQUIDEC2), and work on the determinants of residential mobility among individuals suffering loss of autonomy, as part of the HILAUSENIORS project.
Applicants will ideally have a background in economics, econometrics, or a related quantitative field, have an interest in social policies in France, and be keen to work as part of a multidisciplinary team within a consortium of almost 40 permanent researchers and research technicians.
The successful applicant will be encouraged to present their work to institutional partners and stakeholders through research seminars and conferences in France and abroad.
