Offer Description Job: eDNA Laboratory Technician

1. Association BIOPOLIS is opening a call for one Laboratory Technician position (Reference BIOPOLIS 2024-55), in the framework of the project Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE; Grant Agreement - project 101059492). BGE is a Horizon Europe collaborative project funded through the Horizon Europe programme that aims to accelerate the use of genomic data for biodiversity genomics endeavours across Europe. The successful candidate will develop laboratory work in the fields of molecular biology, carrying out tasks related to the processing of environmental DNA samples, preparation of metabarcoding libraries and associated work.
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for manipulating and conducting molecular analyses planned within this project. The work plan (WP6) will involve:
Biological sample processing and organization.
DNA extraction from soil samples and possibly other source material;
PCR and NGS-related procedures (indexing, cleaning, QC);
Preparation of metabarcoding libraries for Illumina sequencing.
Collaboration in writing technical reports and scientific publications.
The work will be developed under the scientific supervision of Laura Najera Cortazar, Filipa M.S. Martins and Pedro Beja.
6. Applications can be submitted by candidates of any nationality holding a master (MSc) degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent areas. Authorization to work in Portugal is required.
7. Skills and competences required:
Experience in laboratory procedures of molecular biology (DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and sequencing)
Experience in genetic laboratory procedures, preferentially non-invasive protocols;
Experience in the preparation of metabarcoding libraries from environmental DNA samples for Illumina sequencing;
The candidate should be able to work well within a team and have excellent English and communication skills. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
8. Candidates will be ranked based on:
The relevance of work experience for the announced position and training (75%)
Motivation for applying to this position (25%)
9. The jury may decide to select candidates to an interview (in person or by videoconference) to establish the final ranking if the difference between the classification of the top two candidates is less than 10 points (based on the criteria in 7). The jury may not award the position if the profile of the candidates does not meet the requirements of the project.
