Offer Description The research fellow will participate in tasks related to the study of the impact of shockwaves on geometrically complex structures situated in urban environments. To achieve this objective, the following tasks will be undertaken:
Conduct an experimental campaign to establish benchmark validation tests;
Perform numerical simulations to estimate the effects of near-field and interior explosions on buildings and their impact on occupants in complex urban settings;
Analyse the influence of parameters such as façade geometry and orientation, openings (e.g., windows), and proximity to neighbouring buildings on structural damage and occupant injuries;
Propose simplified tools to predict the effects of blast loads in urban environments.
The work will also include the writing and submission of scientific articles and reports.
The research fellow will dedicate the entirety of their professional activity exclusively to NOVA.id.FCT.
Workplace: The Researcher's workplace will be in the Civil Engineering Department, NOVA School of Science and Technology, located at the Campus of Caparica, Portugal, under the scientific advisory of Professor Doctor Corneliu Cismasiu. The contracting party is NOVA.id.FCT – "Associação para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento da FCT".
The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months, with the expected start date in January 2025. The scholarship contract may be potentially renewed for a maximum of three years.

Skills/Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Bachelor and a Master Degree in Civil Engineering or related areas and must fulfil the following requirements:
Experience in numerical simulation of the effects of blast loading in structures using commercial finite element programs (LS-DYNA, blastFoam, etc.);
Proficiency in the English language;
Candidates must be enrolled in the PhD program in Civil Engineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology. Supporting documents must be submitted before signing of the contract. Until then, these documents may be replaced with a declaration of honour.
Academic records with detailed grades transcript must be submitted in the application phase.

Additional Information Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The scholarship amount corresponds to €1,259.64, based on the table of values for scholarships directly awarded by FCT, I.P. in the country, with monthly payment made via bank transfer.
Selection criteria: The selection of the successful candidate will be carried out in two phases. The first phase consists of CV review, the criteria and respective weighting shall be as follows:
Criterion 1 – Curriculum Vitae review (40%) – Evaluated on a scale from 1 to 20
Criterion 2 – Experience in numerical simulation of the effects of explosives in structures using commercial finite element programs (40%) – Evaluated on a scale from 1 to 20
Criterion 3 – Proficiency in the English language – Evaluated on a scale from 1 to 20
The list with the top three admitted candidates and all their relevant documents will be submitted for approval to the Portuguese Army, which is responsible for the project "PR3248 - B0038/2023 – Study on the Viability of Automatically Generated Structural Meshes and the Effects of Blast Actions". The approved candidates shall carry on to the second phase, which consists of an interview, only if they received a classification of 70% or higher in the first phase. The evaluation for the final selection shall have the following weighting: 50% for the interview and 50% for the CV review.
All applicants will be evaluated on a scale from 1 to 20. Candidates with a classification under 15 after the evaluation by the members of the jury according to the selection criteria will not be hired.
