Offer Description
Beamline Scientist at the Inelastic X-ray Scattering Beamline ID20
ESRF - European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
Grenoble, France
COMPANY DESCRIPTION
The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.
Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.
Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.
CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION
The ESRF beamline ID20 is dedicated to hard X-ray resonant and non-resonant inelastic scattering spectroscopy. We study the electronic and magnetic excitations as well as the local coordination in systems that are relevant in the fields of physics and the applied sciences (materials science, coordination chemistry, (bio)catalysis and electro-chemistry, earth and environmental sciences) and are furthermore interested in fundamental aspects of spectroscopy with hard X-rays.
The beamline hosts unique instrumentation for advanced inelastic X-ray scattering and thus provides state-of-the-art research opportunities. For further information about the instrument, please consult http://www.esrf.fr/id20 .
You will be encouraged and supported to develop your own research, which should exploit the exceptional beamline capabilities. Your research will concern the study of elementary electronic and/or magnetic excitations of condensed matter and local electronic and atomic structure. The exact topic of your research will be planned together with your supervisor taking into account your interests and previous experience. You will initiate and participate in collaborative research programs with universities and research centers.
EXPECTED PROFILE
Ph. D in Physics, Chemistry or a related field and several years of experience as a post-doctoral researcher;
Very good skills in instrumentation and previous research related to hard inelastic X-ray scattering are essential;
A background in X-ray spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation instrumentation as well as basic computer programming skills are assets;
Very good communication skills and willingness to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-national staff;
Proficiency in English (working language at ESRF).
WORKING CONDITIONS
The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
