The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) is a multidisciplinary center for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. It is one of the premier climate science research institutes in the world. THE POSITION
The MPI-M is now recruiting
Scientific Programmers (f/m/div)
(W-0025) for three two-year positions.
The successful applicants will be part of a team of research scientists and software engineers contributing to the development of the next generation climate modelling system ICON and its implementation on new high-performance computing systems. In the EU-funded DestinE project, a climate digital twin of the earth system will be implemented using the ICON model at km-scale, and in the German BMBF-funded WarmWorld project, key components of the climate information systems (models, data, and analysis systems) will be refactored to enable scalable development and application.
YOUR TASKS The successful applicants will contribute to the re-factoring of the ICON modelling system as part of a large team across Germany and Europe. Applicants are sought with specific interests in (i) efficient implementation of the modelling system on Europe's leading high-performance computing infrastructures (LUMI, JUPITER) and (ii) refactoring ICON for scalable development.
YOUR PROFILE A PhD in informatics, mathematics, physics, atmosphere / ocean sciences, or related fields; excellently qualified candidates with a master's degree can also be employed and are encouraged to apply Excellent software engineering skills, with extensive programming experience Experience or a strong interest in high-performance computing, GPU programming, and its application to climate science Good communication and teamwork skills as well as the ability to work independently Proficiency in English and/or German OUR OFFER Participation in a challenging part of science in an international, intellectually stimulating environment Access to complex workflows on the bleeding edge of what is technologically possible as well as working for and with an open source community Excellent opportunities for further (self-)training and development, self-organized and/or in external courses and events A network of very experienced and innovative colleagues within the institute and at project partner institutions with a long-proven tradition of sharing knowledge and information Possibility for flexible time management and measures to support work-life balance Attractive subsidy for the job ticket in Hamburg (Deutschlandticket Premium) EMPLOYEEMENT CONDITIONS Candidates will be assessed on the basis of their qualifications and ability to fulfil the responsibilities outlined for this project. Remuneration will be in line with the German civil service (E 14 TVöD), including comprehensive social security benefits. The conditions of employment, including upgrading and duration, will follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and those of the German civil service. In principle, the position is full-time. However, part-time applications may be considered. The positions are for a period of two years and the starting date is as soon as possible.
