Offer Description This research project, part of the ANR WILDSILKS, aims to explore the history of the circulation of so-called wild silks in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century based on French sources, particularly those from Lyon. The missions consist of collecting the relevant bibliography, identifying written and object sources – particularly in the collections of private or public museums – and initiating an analysis in terms of the circulation of knowledge and practices.
Scientific Activities: Establish an inventory of written sources and archival funds useful for documenting the history of so-called wild silks over the selected period.
Establish a bibliography and organize it into sub-themes.
Establish a panel of useful samples from a study in public or private textile collections; conduct the related technical analyses.
Coordinate and monitor the project with other partners (physico-chemistry, anthropology).
Write progress reports.
Promote the results: make oral communications, write scientific publications in collaboration (at least 1 article is expected at the end of the contract).
The researcher will work under the direct supervision of the ANR WILDSILKS coordinator and the researcher responsible for the historical component. He/she will also work closely with the other members of the ANR. The ANR WILDSILKS brings together an interdisciplinary team drawing on history, social anthropology, biology, physical and biochemical sciences, as well as conservation sciences. Registered in both the social sciences and the life and materials sciences, the WILDSILKS project studies the history, current productions, and the role that so-called wild silks can play in deciphering societal and environmental issues.
Qualifications: Holder of a PhD in the history of textiles or a related field; with strong research skills in archival funds.
Good knowledge of textile fibres and manufacturing techniques; experience in technical analysis methods for historical and heritage textiles is appreciated.
The position requires an aptitude for teamwork. He/she must have experience in collective or even interdisciplinary research.
Ability to manage research with rigour and inventiveness, good communication skills.
Fluency in French required.
Additional Comments: Applications must include a cover letter (2 pages maximum) presenting the candidate's skills in relation to the research topic and the context of the ANR. Applications will be examined by the members of the ANR WILDSILKS.
