Offer Description A research engineer position is open at the Laboratoire de Physique of Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon (France). The main objective of our study is to elucidate the role of heat production and diffusion at crack tips, on the rupture of materials, in order to clarify the interplay between the crack dynamics and its local temperature, from slow sub-critical crack growth up to fast dynamic catastrophic failure regimes.
We propose to monitor the evolving temperature field at the crack tips during the failure of different polymeric materials (polymer films, acrylic adhesive layers, PMMA samples), loaded at various speeds, in different geometries, focusing on loading conditions leading to unstable crack growth. The challenge will be to perform temperature measurements, with both a high spatial and temporal resolution, simultaneously to the monitoring of the stress applied, the deformation of the samples, as well as the direct observation of the crack growth.
The research engineer will have to develop a novel innovative method for measuring temperature fields, using luminescent particles that can emit temperature-dependent photo-induced radiations in the visible range. The samples will be obtained through our current collaboration with colleagues at IRCELYON, experts in coordination chemistry for the synthesis of luminescent coordination polymers.
After the calibration of such a novel temperature measuring technique, the research engineer will perform experiments where the fracture occurs along a pre-determined interface. We will study the failure mechanisms involved in two different model materials leading to either a brittle or a ductile mode of rupture:
The detachment front dynamics of an adhesive layer, during the peeling of a pressure sensitive adhesive tape.
The cleavage of brittle PMMA samples along a weak heterogeneous sintered interface.
Through a detailed analysis of the intermittent crackling dynamics of these fronts, the research engineer will be able to demonstrate the role of a self-heating process in triggering the stick-slip instability and relate the avalanche dynamics of the crack front to localized flash heating at the crack tip.
This position is part of an international collaborative project "HotTips - HOw the Temperature of crack TIPS affects rupture", financed by the ANR.
The postdoc will be based at the Laboratoire de Physique, école Normale Supérieure de Lyon. The project will also include strong interactions with the Institut Lumière Matière (ILM) at the University of Lyon, the University of Strasbourg (ITES), and the SPEC division at CEA Saclay.
The candidates must hold a PhD in Physics, Mechanics, or Material Engineering. Experimentalist with an expertise in mechanics, optics, non-linear and statistical physics will be appreciated. A strong knowledge of Labview, and data processing software (Matlab, Python) is required. Experience in scientific English and in the writing of publications for scientific journals, as well as in the presentation of research results in international conferences, is required. The candidate must be able to work as part of a team.
