We are recruiting a Junior Researcher (Reference: BIOPOLIS 2024-56) for a non-fixed-term position, initially full-time for three years, with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of six years. During the last three years, the duties will be carried out on a 50% part-time basis according to the distribution of tasks in the SOS Pygargus project (LIFE23-NAT-PT-LIFE SOS Pygargus, Grant Agreement no. 101148303), funded by the European Union under the LIFE Program. The position supports scientific research and knowledge transfer activities.
The project will establish tools for the short and long-term conservation of the Montagu's Harrier populations in their main Portuguese and transborder distribution areas, implementing conservation measures related to habitat management and improving breeding success, mitigating threats and reducing mortality. It aims to halt the population decline and increase the breeding population by 50% within the 6 years of the project and improve breeding success by more than doubling productivity.
The prospective candidates must hold a PhD in Biology, Environmental or Forest sciences, or a similar scientific area in the Natural Sciences. They should also demonstrate previous experience with data analysis and computer programming, especially R and GIS, as well as bird monitoring and GPS-bird tracking. A relevant publication track record in the area of bird conservation and ecology will be highly valuable. Proficiency in written and spoken Portuguese and English is preferable.
Skills and competencies:
Strong background in Conservation Ecology and Movement Ecology, preferably with steppe birds.
Previous experience on the analysis of movement data from GPS tracked animals.
Experience in tracking birds with GPS technology.
Previous experience with birds-infrastructure interactions.
Proven ability to use Geographic Information System and tracking/movement data or products.
Experience of participation in basic or applied research projects.
Experience in coordinating fieldwork, data analysis and writing reports.
Experience of publication, as first author, of papers in indexed international scientific journals.
The candidate should be able to work well within a team and have excellent English and communication skills. Furthermore, it is expected that the candidate possesses strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
