Overview
The Galvão research group at INL develops three main theoretical research lines: photonic quantum computation, foundations of quantum computation, and quantum software engineering. The group currently counts with approximately 35 members, including 3 staff researchers, 2 associate Professors at the University of Minho, 2 postdocs, and many graduate students. The group coordinates Horizon Europe project FoQaCiA, and is a partner in 2 ongoing EC-funded projects developing theory for photonic quantum computation: EPIQUE "European Photonic Quantum Computer" and QU-BOSS "Quantum Advantage via Non-linear Boson Sampling". For more information on the group's activities please check the website here .

We are looking for 3 qualified junior research fellows to join our team to do theoretical and computational investigation under the project QU-BOSS, coordinated by the University of Rome La Sapienza and with two partners: INL and Consiglio Nazionale Delle Ricerche (Milan), Grant Agreement ID 884676. For more information on the project's activities see here .

The envisaged research topics for the junior research fellows include architectures for scalable photonic quantum computation (based on measurement-based quantum computation concepts), near-term models of quantum computation suitable for photonic platforms, and techniques for benchmarking the resources used in this kind of quantum computer: photonic indistinguishability, coherence, and various notions of nonclassicality.

The research to be undertaken under INL's contract will have its results publicly shared, and is compatible with pursuing a concomitant doctorate.

Job Duties
The job duties will include some combination of the following topics, broadly understood:

Numerical simulation of error-correcting codes suitable for photonic measurement-based quantum computation;

Characterisation of photonic indistinguishability, coherence, and other resources for photonic quantum computation;

Development of device validation techniques, including classical simulation and modelling;

Devising proof-of-concept experiments using reconfigurable interferometers for hybrid quantum computation, quantum machine learning, and other suitable information-processing tasks.

Mandatory Qualifications
Education

Master's degree in Physics, Physical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other related field.*

Candidates finishing their Master degree until December 2024 will still be considered.

Experience with advanced study, or research, on quantum computation and/or quantum optics;

Knowledge of quantum mechanics and quantum information concepts;

Programming ability is valued.

Personal Skills

"Hands-on" approach together with a high commitment in respecting working deadlines;

Problem Solving ability;

Ability to work independently and as a team player;
