A call is open for the awarding of two (2) Research Scholarships (BI) under the project "GEDI4SMOS: Development and testing of computationally efficient methodologies for the combined use of LiDAR, radar, and multispectral data for national characterization of vegetation cover for land occupation mapping purposes," with the reference CCA931573, funded by the Directorate-General for Territory (DGT), under the following conditions:
Scientific Area: Geography, Engineering, and Earth Sciences.
Admission requirements: being enrolled in a Master's degree program in one of the scientific areas mentioned. Graduates in areas related to Geography, Engineering, and Earth Sciences, or related areas, with skills in:
spatial modeling in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in any thematic area, and/or;
photointerpretation of aerial or satellite images and/or processing of satellite images, and/or;
land use/land cover mapping.
Work Plan: Develop and implement methodologies for producing land use/land cover mapping based on spatial modeling in GIS, visual interpretation of aerial and satellite images, and digital processing of satellite images, specifically mapping of interest for the Land Cover Monitorization System (SMOS) ( https://smos.dgterritorio.gov.pt/ ).
Duration of the Scholarships: The scholarship will have a duration of 12 months, starting in November 2024, with the possibility of renewal.
Selection Methods: The selection methods to be used are as follows: curricular evaluation with an eliminatory character, and an interview to assess knowledge and experience, personal motivation, and interest in the position.
After ranking the candidates based on the curricular evaluation, the top 10 candidates will be interviewed. Candidates with a curricular evaluation score below 10 points will not advance to the interview stage. The final score will be the weighted average of the curricular evaluation and the interview, with the following weighting factors:
0.4 for the curricular evaluation;
0.6 for the interview.
Candidates with a final score below 10 points will not be selected for the scholarship.
Application Deadline and Submission Process: The competition is open from October 17 to October 31, 2024, and the selection results will be published by November 14, 2024.
Applications must be formalized, without exception, by sending a cover letter accompanied by the following documents, under penalty of exclusion:
Photocopy of the citizen card or identity card and the tax identification card;
Detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV);
Photocopies of certificates of academic degrees held;
Document describing competencies in spatial analysis using GIS;
Document describing competencies in the interpretation of aerial or satellite images and satellite image processing;
Document describing competencies in land use/land cover mapping.
Documents exceeding one A4 page will not be considered. For application purposes, proof can be replaced by a declaration of honor from the candidate. However, failure to demonstrate possession of the required degree by the application deadline will result in the annulment of the candidate's evaluation.
