We work on the Global Streaming Platform supporting various video-on-demand products including Sky Showtime, Peacock and Showmax. The Sky Tech Hub in Prague consists of around 100 people and will continue to grow. These are mostly developers, video streaming enthusiasts and experts, with extensive experience across markets, technologies, and products working on the Global Streaming Platform. We work closely with our colleagues in the UK, Portugal and the United States.
What role will you play?
As our Senior CDN Engineer, you will join our Content Delivery Engineering team, reporting to Global Video Engineering, an organisation distributed across NBCUniversal and Sky. The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring our streaming propositions provide exceptional experiences of streaming VOD, Event and Linear content to millions of subscribers from our UK, EU and Africa based streaming products - SkyShowtime, Showmax and Now/Wow.
The role requires daily collaboration with our colleagues and vendors, located primarily across the US, UK and beyond – fluent spoken and written English is a must.
The Content Delivery Engineering team's expertise is focussed on the web-scale use of Content Delivery Networks, performance telemetry, analytics, selection and interfacing with content origins, dynamic ad insertion and player technologies.
What You'll Do:
Attain a comprehensive, technical understanding of how all our streaming products and associated technologies operate.
Develop current and new content delivery designs needed to improve performance & features for our products and services.
Provide diligent peer review to changes as part of a team focussed on reducing incidents and improving reliability.
Bring rigor and insight to the development of our Functional Testing and Non Functional Testing methods and procedures.
Have an eye for developing automation to reduce team toil and unforced errors.
Enjoy troubleshooting and complex problem solving, while collaborating with the team to arrive with results.
Make best use of all monitoring solutions to diagnose issues and support in-depth analyses.
Create and maintain operations runbooks for managing the production CDN network.
Participate in on-call rotation to resolve operational issues and performance degradation.
What skills do you need to play your role well?
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a relevant field is preferred.
Production use of CDN to deliver streaming media and/or services at significant scale.
Minimum three years of experience creating and/or managing complex CDN or web server/proxy configurations.
An appreciation of the use of industry-standard KPIs for effective performance measurement.
A sound, production understanding and use of TCP/IP, IPv4/v6, DNS, HTTP, TLS and load balancing.
Use of scripting and/or programming to solve problems.
Expertise with scaled, distributed performance testing / Functional Testing & Non Functional Testing.
Experience with Web Application Firewalls and Denial of Service protection.
Effective interaction with SRE and associated technologies to assist safe, consistent technology operations.
Proven track record with providing 24/7 on call support via rota.
Enjoy learning and collaboration with multi-cultural, international teams.
Fluent spoken and written technical English required.
