Admission Requirements Research grants are intended for students enrolled in a degree-conferring course to carry out R&D activities with the aim to consolidate their scientific training through the development of research work leading to the attainment of the respective academic degree or completion of the course, or for students enrolled in courses that do not confer an academic degree but are integrated in an educational project of a higher education institution and developed in association or cooperation with R&D units.
Candidates must be enrolled in PhD studies in telecommunications engineering or equivalent, or be enrolled in a course at the University of Coimbra that does not confer an academic degree, with knowledge in optical communication systems, great motivation, and ability for teamwork.
Work Objectives The objective of this project is the optimization of a prototype of a high-resolution FMCW LiDAR system using a directly modulated semiconductor laser. The main objectives of this scholarship are:
Establishment of an experimental software defined experimental testbed.
Assessment of the laser chirp nonlinearity.
Implementation of pre-distortion algorithms for chirp nonlinearity compensation.
Experimental validation and optimization of the developed pre-distortion methods.
Place of Work The work will be developed at the premises of Instituto de Telecomunicações at Coimbra, under the supervision of Prof. Maria do Carmo Raposo de Medeiros.
Duration 6 months, with the possibility of renewal. Start date: 15th of December 2024 or soon thereafter.
Monthly Salary 1.259,64 € (net), according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by FCT for positions held in Portugal (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment will be made by bank transfer.
Selection Criteria The candidate will be selected based on their CV (25%), demonstrated experience in tasks related to the work plan of this project (35%), interview (30%), oral and written fluency in English (10%). The Jury has the right to not admit any of the candidates that applied for this position whenever they consider that no candidate meets the minimum requirements for the position.

Communication of Results Results will be published at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, in Coimbra. The selected candidate will be notified by email.
