This position is responsible for performing routine preventative maintenance and timely repair of equipment in accordance with established maintenance and safety procedures. Work is typically performed with minimal direct supervision. Major repairs may be performed in conjunction with other mechanics or under the supervision of a more senior mechanic. Mechanics may be required to work on the highway crew as needed. Primary Duties & Responsibilities (Illustrative Only) The essential job functions and duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Performs inspections and maintenance on gasoline, diesel, automotive, and construction equipment, such as dump trucks, loaders, excavators, street sweepers, buses, tractors, and other vehicles. Operates various automotive testing equipment and power tools necessary to perform duties. Performs diagnostic checks of electronic engines controls/emission systems. Performs diagnostic checks of hydraulic systems and related components. Troubleshoots and repairs drivability problems, mechanical issues, heating and air conditioning, brakes, exhaust systems, vehicle suspensions, and electrical systems. Performs body work to vehicles as needed. Performs welding and fabrication using standard equipment, such as oxy-acetylene torches and plasma cutters. Maintains and repairs small engines, such as chainsaws, pavement saws, mowers, and string trimmers. Assists Fire Department Mechanic, as needed. Provides recommendations to supervisor regarding the repair or replacement of defective equipment. Communicates effectively and works harmoniously with supervisors, mechanics, and other employees. Researches and orders repair parts and maintenance supplies over the phone and online. Strives to identify lowest cost options when prudent. Prepares and keeps accurate written and electronic records, such as service logs, preventative maintenance schedules, and equipment lists. Uses safe work practices and adheres to departmental, organizational, and industry safety standards and practices. Consistently uses recommended personal protective equipment. Maintains a clean, organized work area free of hazards. Proactively corrects and/or reports potential hazards in the workplace when observed.
