The Port of Barcelona's Muelle Sur Container Terminal is 100% owned by APM Terminals and has an annual throughput capacity of 1,560,000 TEU. APM Terminals is committed to major investments in further upgrading terminal infrastructure and container handling equipment over the coming years to enable the terminal to handle the largest container ships in service.
APM Terminals Project Execution has, in agreement with APM Terminals Barcelona, recently commenced the ramp-up of the corresponding, multi-year project with the main focus on the civil & electrical engineering deliverables (quay wall, land side rail beam and furniture upgrades). The main challenge of this project resides in the need to undertake simultaneous operations i.e. multi-shift, marine and land construction works in between and around 24/7 operational berths, within a very busy port area (incl. cruise terminals proximity).
The Project Civil Engineer is an important role in planning, directing and controlling the delivery of civil engineering works. Its objective is to support the Civil Package Manager and closely collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders so that the necessary planning, design, engineering and construction are executed according to the project's scope, schedule, quality and budget.
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities:GeneralMonitor civil site works and control progress (the contractor remains responsible for delivery).Influence internal and external decision making processes on the civil aspects of the project and cross-functionally advise the Interface-, HSSE-, Equipment-, and IT Managers.Maintain awareness of civil requirements, risks and changes.Meet regularly with engineering and site supervision consultants, construction contractors and suppliers to maintain their focus on issues which may impact safety, scope, progress, interfaces, milestones and/or budget.Address emerging issues avoiding where possible contractual disputes with the construction contractor's site management.Actively promote safety and assume a visible leadership role on the construction site.Support the Project HSSE Manager in ensuring that all staff regard safety as a priority.Monitor compliance by all engineering consultants, construction contractors and suppliers with APM Terminals' safety standards and policies (in cooperation with the Project HSSE Manager).Implement APMT project controls/procedures to manage the construction in a forward-looking manner.Track construction progress against the approved baseline and, where appropriate, ensure issues are pro-actively addressed, resolved and/or escalated, and reported.Analyse project schedule, assess delays and suggest pro-active or corrective measures.Assess project changes and their impacts, and manage them in line with company procedures.Monitor and assess civil opportunities, risks and subsequent mitigation strategies, and track such risks through input into the project risk register.Provide direction and support where needed to the Engineer on site (who will be managing the Contractor's contractual responsibilities), responding to Requests for Information related to Employer's requirements and associate scope of work in a timely manner.Controls & governanceImplement and uphold APM Terminals' standards and best practices in project execution, including proactive risk, cost, change and schedule management related to the Civil package.Ensure adhesion to all Spanish civil engineering design and construction standards.CommunicationsEnsure clear and constant communication is maintained within the project and terminal teams in relation to civil matters.Meet regularly with engineering consultants, construction contractors and suppliers to maintain full alignment on the project delivery.InterfacesWork closely with and provide support to the Civil Package Manager.Coordinate continuously with the Project's HSSE Manager, Interface Manager and Project Controls Department.Liaise with the APM Terminals' Asset Engineering & Design Department to ensure consistency with the Standard Employer Requirements.Critical Qualifications / Experience / SkillsQualificationsAcademic degree (BSc or MSc or equivalent) in civil engineering (required).Project management qualification/certification such as PMP, PMQ (preferred).Experience5-10 years' experience in a marine civil engineering and/or construction project related environment, including public or private projects, in Spain (required).Project or package management experience, with clear responsibility on achieving safety, quality, time and budget targets (required).Broad knowledge of FIDIC Contract Framework (required).Familiarity with contracts management: site administration, claims and mitigation support, quality control and dealing with non-conformities (required).Experience in simultaneous operations environments (preferred).Contractor management experience (preferred).SkillsFully aligned with and living the Maersk values: Humbleness, Uprightness, Constant Care, Our Employees and Our Name.Organizational and situational agility - able to work in a changing environment.Strong personality – able to work with and comfortable in challenging and being challenged by all personnel at all levels within organizations.Cultural sensitivity and ability to work with multiple personality types.English and Spanish language fluency (both required).Strong planning skills and high analytical capability.Hands-on and disciplined, with attention to detail.Strong communicator, verbally and visually.Able to build strong working relationships with stakeholders.Results oriented, resourceful and perseverant.Systems KnowledgeMicrosoft Office 365 and SharePoint (both required).Microsoft Project (required) and Oracle Primavera P6 (preferred).Experience with Electronic Data Management/Document Control systems (preferred).Maersk is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace, and we embrace different styles of thinking.
