The Challenge: Ventrata is seeking an experienced PostgreSQL Database Administrator (DBA) to join our growing team. This is our first dedicated database administrator role, and you'll play a key part in shaping our database strategy as we scale. You'll work closely with two infrastructure engineers and have the opportunity to influence the future architecture of our data systems.
Our current PostgreSQL database is hosted in Google Cloud and was originally designed by developers. While functional, it's now hitting limitations as our business grows. We need a database expert who can take charge, optimize, and ready it for the next level of scaling. If you're passionate about problem-solving, love working on complex systems, and have a mastery of PostgreSQL, this is the role for you.
Responsibilities and Duties Take ownership of our PostgreSQL databases, focusing on performance, scaling, and future-proofing. Optimize existing database architecture and queries, resolving bottlenecks and improving overall efficiency. Understand the specificities of running PostgreSQL in Google Cloud Platform along with its limitations. Collaborate with infrastructure engineers to ensure smooth integration with the company's infrastructure as code (IaC) environment. Design and implement database data export automations for various use cases - automated PR deployments, client data backups, etc. Develop strategies to scale the database as the company and data needs to grow including sharding and partitioning. Suggest and implement efficient strategies for connection pooling in code or tools such as PgBouncer. Work with engineering teams to provide guidance on database design, indexing strategies, and SQL query optimization. Create tooling for archiving old data. Why Join Us? Qualifications: Previous experience as (PostgreSQL) Database Administrator, including experience with large-scale databases (2TB+). Expert-level knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture, including performance tuning, query optimization, and replication. Hands-on experience with databases hosted in major cloud providers. Proven track record of designing scalable, highly available database architectures. Strong understanding of security best practices and regulatory compliance (GDPR, SOC2, etc.). Experience with performance monitoring tools like pganalyze and query analysis. Familiarity with database versioning and DevOps principles. Experience collaborating with engineering and infrastructure teams to improve database design and performance. Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Nice to have: Hands-on experience with databases hosted in Google Cloud (GCP), including Cloud SQL and relevant services. Benefits: We are fairly informal about working hours.
