Offer Description - Work Environment: The objective of the interdisciplinary ZAMBA project is to compare the prevalence and diversity of pathogens and vectors between the preserved Pantanal and the highly anthropogenic Cerrado biomes. Using a One Health approach, we will detect bacteria and parasites from wild armadillos (known to be infected with multiple pathogens), dogs, humans, and vectors in both biomes. The postdoctoral researcher will be based in the MIVEGEC Unit of the IRD, in Montpellier. Mainly face-to-face laboratory work, and phylogenetic analyses of the sequences obtained. Possibility of a stay in a laboratory in Brazil to be discussed.
As the project will be carried out in close collaboration with Brazilian partners, a good level of English is mandatory, and knowledge of Brazilian culture (e.g. stay in Brazil) and a good command of Portuguese will be highly appreciated (but not essential). Looking for a motivated postdoc to work in a multicultural team based in Montpellier, with collaborators/students in several Latin American countries. The postdoc will work in close collaboration with a Brazilian PhD student and a research engineer recruited from within the project.
- Main Mission: Carry out the molecular identification, sequencing, and phylogenetic/bioinformatics analyses of various pathogens derived from DNA of blood samples from Brazilian armadillos, dogs, and humans, as well as vectors (ticks and sandflies). Isolate and characterize antibiotic-resistant bacteria from fecal samples.
Activities PCR, qPCR, and possibly metabarcoding to detect bacteria and parasites (hemobacteria and hemoparasites, toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis) from DNA samples extracted from armadillos, dogs, humans, and vectors.
Sequencing (Sanger and WGS) of pathogens from PCR or qPCR detections.
Isolation, identification, and purification of enterobacteria for WGS.
Phylogenetic analyses and writing of scientific manuscripts on the results obtained.
