Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) opens a call for one research fellowship under the project "CENTAUR – Creating and refining whole-genome and core-genome typing schemas for pathogen surveillance" with the funding support from "ISIDORe Joint Research Activities, European Union".
Scientific Area(s): Bioinformatics.
Fellowship recipients / Admission requirements: Any National, foreign and stateless candidate(s). Applicants must hold the following requirements:
Hold a PhD in Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Biology, Health Sciences, Computer Science, Biochemistry, Biomedical Sciences, or related fields, with an emphasis on genomic data analysis, phylogenetic analysis, or population biology;
Doctorate must have been obtained less than 3 years ago (mandatory);
Proficiency in working with the Linux operating system;
Strong scripting skills in bash;
Proficiency in English.
Although not mandatory, the following will be considered an advantage:
International experience of the candidate;
Experience with Python programming;
Experience working with high-throughput sequencing data;
Experience working on bacterial population genomic analysis.
Work Plan and Objectives:
The selected candidate will join a multidisciplinary team within the Project, aiming to develop and apply high-throughput sequencing data analysis pipelines for bacterial identification, virulence factors, and antimicrobial resistance, as well as analysis methods and visualization of phylogenetic relationships incorporating other metadata;
Active participation in the development of new analysis methods, specifically improving whole-genome multilocus sequence typing schemes;
High-throughput sequencing data analysis for the characterization of outbreaks and microbial population evolution in both hospital and community settings;
Analysis of high-throughput sequencing results for phylogenetic and population structure analyses of human pathogenic bacteria;
Development of tools that generate analysis reports usable by epidemiologists and other healthcare professionals without advanced bioinformatics knowledge.
Predicted start date, duration and renewal conditions: The fellowship contract is predicted to start November 2024, for a period of 3 (three) months on an exclusive basis, eventually renewable until the maximum stipulated in applicable regulations, not exceeding the eligibility period of the project (expected to end on July 31, 2025).
