Offer Description We are offering two post-doctoral contracts (up to 5 years) from November 2024 or until filled. They are linked to our ERC-Synergy project entitled " Reconstructing the environmental, biological and societal drivers of plague outbreaks in Eurasia between 1300 and 1900 CE - Synergy-Plague ", an inter-disciplinary project involving four main PIs: Dr. F. Sebbane (Inserm, Lille, France), Pr. NC. Stenseth (U. Oslo, Norway), Pr. P. Slavin (U. Stirling, UK), and Pr. U. Büntgen (U. Cambridge, UK). The positions are for the plague and Yersinia pestis team, headed by F. Sebbane. In this team, the main tasks are to establish, maintain and/or use arthropod colonies to study their development and the outcome of infection under conditions of interest, and decipher the molecular aspects associated with the models used.
The lab and its working environment. Our team (ciil.fr/teams/plague-yersinia-pestis) consists of 9 people (4 researchers, 1 engineer, 1 assistant engineer, 2 post-docs & 1 PhD student). However, Synergy-Plague will employ one technician (5 years contract) and other post-docs (5 & 3 years contract). Our team is one of the few in the world, and the only one in Europe, to have the expertise, knowledge and access to facilities for the study of all aspects of the life cycle of Yersinia pestis (i.e. insect-mammal-insect cycle). Part of the Center of Infection and Immunity of Lille (ciil.fr), we are located on the campus of the Institut Pasteur de Lille (pasteur-lille.fr/en/), which is composed of 8 units and 34 teams. As such, we have access to large and complementary expertise and a wide range of disciplines. Located in the north of France, Lille is a pleasant city with numerous students and which is at the crossroads of Europe (1h from Paris, The employer. Skills/Qualifications:
The candidates must hold a PhD in biology and should have expertise/knowledge in microbiology (preferably bacteriology) and/or (medical) entomology, animal models, pathogenesis, immunology, histology, microbiota, molecular biology, and multi-omics. The candidates must demonstrate excellent autonomy, communication, and collaboration skills, and must speak in English.

Additional comments: The host laboratory conducts research involving a select agent, requiring candidates to obtain authorization from the relevant French authorities before starting work. The host laboratory is responsible for submitting the authorization request, using the information provided by the candidates. As a result, the contract will only be signed once approval from the French authorities has been granted.
