Offer Description The Centre François Viète is a research unit (UR1161) specialising in epistemology and the history of science and technology. It has two sites and two supervising institutions, the University of Nantes (UN), which is the lead institution, and the University of Western Brittany (UBO). You will be working on the LivACT project ('Living and ageing with chronic illnesses and technological devices: Meanings, practices and recompositions of autonomy over time') led by Lucie Dalibert (Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1).
A summary of the project can be accessed by following the link. The LivACT project is part of the 'Techniques, methods and fields in clinical research and practice' programme at the Centre François Viète. You will be under the supervision of Mathilde Lancelot, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at Nantes University & at the Centre François Viète. The researcher will be provided with workplace resources (an office, a computer, online editorial resources, office consumables). Frequent travel and visits are to be expected, mainly in France.
MISSIONS: You will be recruited for 24 months (renewable 1 time), in particular within the LivACT PPR WP1 (entitled 'Chronic living and ageing with technology'), although your work will be disseminated and discussed across all the other workstreams. Your main tasks will be to:
Explore the experiences and practices of people living with a chronic illness, in particular Parkinson's, and equipped with technology, through fieldwork (longitudinal interviews and observations) and theoretical analysis;
Analyze the different conceptions of autonomy that emerge from the analysis of these experiences;
Participate in the writing of articles, monographs and the presentation of results to various audiences;
Participate in the organisation of scientific events (colloquia, seminars, workshops, etc.) relating to the LivACT project and, more broadly, to the intellectual life of the project;
Participate in the activities and life of the host research laboratory (Centre François Viète).
MAIN ACTIVITIES: The postdoctoral student's research will explore the experiences and practices of people living with Parkinson's disease who are equipped with technology, as well as the experiences of their relatives. The aim is to understand not only the way in which the chronic experience is recomposed over time and with the introduction of new technologies, but also the way in which the use or non-use of certain technological devices is linked to their aspirations and their experience of autonomy.
The postdoctoral researcher will also analyse the infrastructures (material and discursive) of chronic care and equipment in order to understand the expectations, prescriptions and injunctions of the social world to which people living and ageing with a chronic disease are subject, and to understand the extent to which this ecosystem conforms to, supports or hinders their aspirations for autonomy.
Finally, the post-doctoral researcher will be interested in the conceptions of autonomy that healthcare professionals and possibly engineers mobilise in the design, prescription and adjustment of technological devices. This work will focus on a comprehensive analysis of the experiences of people affected by chronic experience with technological devices, cross-referenced with the practices of players in the world of care, the world of devices and the world of associations in which these people take part. More specifically, the project will involve reviewing the state of the art on the subject, carrying out fieldwork (longitudinal interviews and observations) and its theoretical analysis, as well as presenting scientific papers, writing articles and monographs and presenting the results to different audiences. In this context, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to be a driving force in team discussion of the results in order to produce a comparative analysis.
The postdoctoral student will be part of an interdisciplinary research team and will be required to spend 3 months in a foreign partner university (the University of Linköping [Sweden], the University of Copenhagen [Denmark], the University of Edinburgh [United Kingdom] or the University of Tasmania [Australia]).
He or she will help to organise LivACT's scientific events (2 conferences and 1 summer school), take part in its monthly seminars and contribute to its website. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate more broadly in the laboratory life of the Centre François Viète (seminars and workshops when the LivACT RPP schedule allows). An on-site presence is recommended.
