1 | RESEARCH GRANT TYPE
ONE research grant for students with BSc degree with reference number BI|2024/595 is now available under the scope of the project ATE – Refª C644914747-0000023, funded by Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) and by European funds Next Generation EU, under the following conditions:
2 | DURATION
SIX (6) months, starting in January 2025.
- Renewable, if the candidate is enrolled in a MSc program subject to suitable performance within the period of the project, not exceeding the maximum period set by FCT for such grants – 2 years (included contract renewals).
- Renewable, if the candidate is enrolled in a non-degree programme subject to suitable performance within the period of the project, not exceeding the maximum period set by FCT for such grants – 1 year (included contract renewals).
3 | LEGISLATION

The fellowship contract is awarded on an exclusive dedication basis.
The objectives of these positions are to support the research team in the PRR-Agenda ATE – C644914747-00000023 / 56 project on the following tasks:
Complete the hardware and firmware of a Nonintrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) prototype. Send real-time power consumption data to a cloud-based service. Develop the cloud interface including database and graphical visualization. Develop a smartphone application for visualization and monitoring the NILM data.
6 | SCIENTIFIC SUPERVISION
The activity will be supervised by:
INESC ID will integrate the grantee in the research team of the scientific advisor.
7 | ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The candidates should have:
Bachelor's (BSC) Degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, electronics branch.
Be enrolled in a Master's Program (MSc) in electrical engineering, with well-defined competences in electronic system design and sensor readout, embedded system development and cloud interfaces.
By the grant start date, the candidate must be enrolled in:
Bachelor's (BSC) Degree or equivalent in electrical engineering, electronics branch.
Be enrolled in a Master's Program (MSc) in electrical engineering, with well-defined competences in electronic system design and sensor readout, embedded system development and cloud interfaces.
Preferences will be given to candidates with:
Experience in printed circuit boards (PCBs) design, and embedded system design including microprocessor-based hardware and firmware.
Experience with high level programming language e.g. C#, Python, or other similar languages.
Experience using Altium designer PCB software.
Experience with STM and ESP32 microprocessor development tools (STM32CubeIDE, ESP-IDF).
Experience in cloud-based applications, HTTP/MQTT protocols, Node-RED, InfluxDB, Grafana.
Experience in instrumentation and development of user interfaces for laboratory equipment.
The candidate should be dynamic and proactive in problem-solving, capable of working in a goal-oriented environment, and able to thrive in the multidisciplinary culture of INESC-ID. The candidate should be able to communicate effectively with colleagues from these respective fields. Limited experience is required but fast-paced learning and progress is expected.
8 | EVALUATION CRITERIA AND COMMITTEE
The selection will be according to the following criteria:
50%: Hands-on experience in electronic system design and prototyping.
The jury may also decide not to assign the scholarship if none of the candidates meets the required conditions.
9 | COMPLAIN AND APPEAL DEADLINES AND PROCEDURES
The jury has the faculty not to select a candidate who does not prove the requirements mentioned in required education level and research experience. The admitted and excluded candidates will be notified by email of the final ranking list, including the copy of the Preliminary Report of the jury.
Prior Hearing and Deadline for Final Decision: After being notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit, if applicable, a formal rebuttal. After that period, the jury notifies the candidates of the Final Report.
Excluded applicants may complain about the jury's final report for 15 working days after notification or appeal the jury's decision to the INESC ID Board of Directors for 30 working days after notification.
According to the Portuguese Law, a disabled candidate has a preference when in equal classification, which prevails over any other legal preference.
