Offer Description After water, granular material is the second material used in industry. Improving our knowledge of their behavior can lead to huge energy savings during loading, transportation, and mixing processes. The PhD student will focus on the optimization of loading operations, as typically used in the mining industry, in collaboration with Safe Metal, a company designing and selling equipment for buckets used on excavators and wheel loaders. The process of loading material is still poorly understood and raises fundamental questions in the physics of granular media that we would like to address during this PhD. Key questions include:
Why and how do the presence of teeth on the bucket help in penetrating a granular medium and in loading?
How to optimize the system in terms of the shape of the teeth, their number, and their size, depending on the material properties?
How does wear occur due to successive penetration in the granular material?
The goal of the PhD is to investigate the problem of penetration, loading, and wear on simple geometries and model materials, and to identify the physical phenomena that need to be considered in an optimization process. The work will combine experimental, numerical, and theoretical approaches.
