Offer Description The Laboratory for Wear, Testing & Materials of Instituto Pedro Nunes (LED&MAT) opens a fellowship for a researcher for a period of 48 months and a monthly value of 1260.00 EUR, to support R&D in the field of Chemical Engineering under the guidance of LED&MAT's researchers, in the framework of the project designated "Alchemissts - Designing of sustainable tailor-made copolymers for advanced lubricants", Grant Agreement n.º 101178074, financed by the European Commission in the scope of Horizon Europe.
The grant is destined to: holders of a completed MSc degree in Engineering (Biomedical, Materials, Process, Chemical, Polymers), Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related discipline, and enrolled in a Doctoral program in those areas or in a non-degree program.
The goals of the grant are:
Most lubricating oils are mineral and their use causes various problems, such as pollution of soils and the atmosphere. Some biodegradable oils are currently being developed to replace mineral oils. However, to meet the increasing demands of the market, they require additives to improve their lubricating properties, which are generally very harmful to the environment. Among the additives used to reduce wear, zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) salts are the most popular due to their efficient wear-reducing effect, although the permissible levels of sulphates, phosphorus, and sulphur (SAPS), the components of ZDDP, are increasingly restricted in oil formulations.
This project aims to develop new tailor-made block copolymers that have the necessary compatibility between the self-lubricating coatings and the lubricating oil, using eco-friendly polymerization strategies.
The work plan includes tasks in the following activities:
Synthesis of tailor-made block copolymers using RDRP methods
Characterization of block copolymers
Scale-up of the polymerization method
The work will be carried out at the Laboratory for Wear, Testing & Materials of Instituto Pedro Nunes (LED&MAT), under the scientific supervision of Professor Jorge Coelho.
The applications must be submitted through the website www.ipn.pt from 2024-11-01 until 2024-11-15, with all the required documents.
