By order of the Director of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), dated 04 October, 2024 it was decided to open an international selection competition to hire one Initial Level PhD to carry out research activities in the scientific area of Biological Sciences, in the scope of the Project "Fishing Architecture" (Ref. ERC-2021-COG 101044244 FISH-A), funded by European Commission – Horizon Europe, ongoing at Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU), by means of an individual uncertain term employment contract, under the Portuguese Labour Code.
1. Scientific areas
The scientific areas are Biological Sciences and/or Fisheries Sciences.
2. Applicable Legislation
The tender is governed by the provisions of Regulation no. 487/2020 – Regulation for Research, Science and Technology Staff of the University of Porto and the respective contract, hereinafter referred to as Regulation, published in the Official Journal of the Portuguese Republic, series 2, no. 100, of 22 May, and by other applicable legislation, namely the Labour Code, approved by Law no. 7/2009, of 12 February, in its current wording, Decree-Law no. 57/2016, of 29 August, amended by Law no. 57/2017 of 19 July, which approves a legal regime for employing PhD holders aimed at stimulating scientific and technological employment in all fields of knowledge (Legal Regime for Scientific Employment – LRSE); Regulative Decree no. 11-A/2017, of 29 December; and applicable regulatory standards.
3. Admission requirements:
3.1. General admission requirements
This competition is open to national candidates, foreigners and stateless persons holding a doctoral degree in Biological Sciences and/or Fisheries Sciences or related areas and with a scientific and professional curriculum that shows an appropriate profile for the activity to be developed, in accordance with point 8.
If the candidate holds a doctoral degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 August.
3.2. Special admission requirements are as follows:
Previous experience in Ichthyology or Fisheries;
Hold a PhD for less than 5 years;
Availability for frequent travel (to be declared in the motivation letter).
4. Preferential requirements:
Knowledge of fish biology, e.g. life cycles, behavior and population dynamics;
Previous experience in research projects;
Authorship or co-authorship of scientific articles;
Motivation to pursue the research themes of the project;
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English;
International experience.
5. Remuneration
The monthly remuneration to be paid is €2,294.95 corresponding to the 1st position, level 5, of the table annexed to the Regulation or to level 33 of the Single Remuneration Table.
6. Workplace
The workplace is located at the Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, Via Panorâmica Edgar Cardoso, 215, 4150-564 Porto.
7. Hiring regime
The doctoral candidate will be hired under an uncertain term employment contract and will remain only for the period necessary for the execution of the tasks defined in the project.
8. Functions to be performed
The functions of research staff include research, knowledge transfer and valorisation, management and communication of science and technology, training and teaching activities. The Initial Level PhD is responsible for carrying out research and development activities including:
Referencing the state of the art literature on biology of cod, sardine and tuna North Atlantic populations;
Compilation and representation of referenced biological literature;
Assessing historical biomass of fish populations of cod, sardine, and tuna in the North Atlantic;
Implementation and interpretation of data meta-analysis;
Participation and collaboration in the writing of scientific articles and other productions associated with the project.
9. Selection panel
The selection panel is composed as follows:
President: Dr. André Carinha Tavares, Coordinator Researcher of Fishing Architecture research project.
Members: Prof. Dr. José Pedro Ovelheiro Marques de Sousa, Associate Professor.
Alternate members: Prof. Dr. Manuel Joaquim Soeiro Moreno, Associate Professor; Prof. Dr. Teresa Calix, Associate Professor.
10. Selection methods
Evaluation of the candidate's scientific and professional career (APCC) - 90%;
Interview (ENT) - 10%.
11. Submission of applications
Applications shall be formalised by means of a request addressed to the President of the Jury, containing the identification of this notice and supporting documents as specified.
Applications must be submitted exclusively on the FPCEUP website by 11:59 pm local time until October 31, 2024.
