We are hiring an epidemiologist to contribute to the ORCHIDEE project: National Network of Hospitals Involved in Epidemiological Surveillance and Emergency Response.
Currently, France lacks a near real-time hospital surveillance system to monitor hospitalizations caused by various infectious diseases, including severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), and to assess the impact of emerging phenomena.
To address this gap, the ORCHIDEE project, coordinated by the French National Public Health Agency (Santé Publique France), aims to develop a new scientific surveillance protocol and establish its adoption across a national network of hospitals. This initiative leverages health data from hospital data warehouses (EDSH).
Participating hospitals will collaborate on standardized scientific surveillance protocols and produce epidemiological indicators that will feed into a national SARI surveillance system. These indicators will be regularly reported to Santé Publique France, which will share insights with national and regional decision-makers, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the public.
The project also invests in the infrastructure necessary for implementing the surveillance protocol in hospitals and in staff training. Moreover, the surveillance proof-of-concept will extend beyond SARIs to include other critical health events identified by national and European public health authorities.
ORCHIDEE is a national project funded by the European Commission, involving 25 hospital teams in mainland France, the Antilles, and Réunion Island.
As part of the WP2 project team, and under the supervision of the coordinator, your tasks will include:
Overseeing the development of a SARI surveillance proof-of-concept with a dedicated working group, including conducting scientific monitoring and reviewing existing data on case definitions and indicators to build a reference framework.
Actively participating in the work of other groups focused on additional diseases.
Contributing to defining priority epidemiological indicators to be produced by healthcare establishments.
Coordinating preparation and implementation of the evaluation of the national SARI surveillance system, integrating indicators produced by university hospital data warehouses.
Drafting documents related to WP2 deliverables, including the scientific protocol for indicator production (blueprint).
Contributing to centralized indicator analysis, feedback, and making them available as open data.
Supporting BPH and Santé Publique France in managing a scientific committee on hospital epidemiological surveillance in France, gathering stakeholder feedback to adjust activity monitoring and resource allocation for WP2.
This position is part of a fixed-term project contract, with objectives including the delivery of scientific protocols and adherence to project schedules.

Skills/Qualifications:
At least a master's degree in epidemiology or public health (BAC+5) with experience in epidemiological surveillance and managing multi-partner networks (2 years preferred).
Demonstrates rigor, teamwork, and initiative.
Proficiency in at least one biostatistics software (e.g., R, STATA).
Strong written and spoken English skills.
Excellent writing and interpersonal skills.

Additional Information Location: Bordeaux (Carreire Campus) – Tram, bus, and bike access (near Hôpital Pellegrin tram stop).
Contract: 30-month fixed-term starting January 15, 2025.
Monthly gross salary: €2,460–€3,140, based on experience.
