UNU-EGOV The United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV), based in the city of Guimarães, north of Portugal, is one of 14 research and training Institutes and Units that comprise the UNU system.
The mission of UNU-EGOV is to support the Member States of the United Nations in transforming the mechanisms of governance and building effective governance capabilities through strategic applications of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to contribute to sustainable development, social inclusion and active citizenship.
Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Director of UNU-EGOV, the Communications Design Associate will be responsible for the following tasks:
Creative development and visual identity
• Conduct the creative development, design and execution of a large variety of designed products in line with the visual identity and overall communication objectives of UNU-EGOV.
• Contribute to the evolution of the brand and visual identity of UNU-EGOV and its activities and projects.
• Ensure that the branded products meet quality, consistency, and visual identity guidelines. Communication Design
• Serve as liaison for all communication design aspects of research, publication, events and other UNU-EGOV activities.
• Participate in meetings with the other members of the communication team, management and researchers to discuss design projects, namely substantive content, communication objectives, and distribution channels.
• Ensure that all the visual representations, including video and photos, promote the UNU core values of inclusion. Editorial Design
• Develop and maintain production templates for serial and one-off publications such as policy briefs, books, reports, etc.
• Layout and typeset publications for print and digital.
• Develop charts, tables and figures based on complex scientific data.
• Conduct print management and quality control of external printing services as required. Digital Design
• Develop and design innovative visual products, such as infographics to convey key messages in an impactful way.
• Create templates for newsletters, press releases and other communication materials which are distributed electronically.
• Collaborate with the other members of the Communication team to develop impactful and engaging visuals for all social media channels (currently Facebook, and LinkedIn) and for the UNU-EGOV websites. Liaison with external providers
• Identify suitable external agencies and freelance service providers in the areas of branding, design, video production and animation.
• Provide technical evaluation of vendor proposals and conduct quality-control checks on external design/video/photo work commissioned by UNU-EGOV. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Key Performance Indicators High-quality and impactful editorial and digital design work developed on time. High-quality, cost-competitive design, photo and video products are commissioned from vendors. UNU-EGOV design, photo and video products are aligned with overall organizational messaging. • Communication Design, Design Management, Media Design, Visual Communication or related field.
2) Required skills and experience Required
• Secondary education with 5 years of experience, a bachelor's degree with 3 years or a master's degree with one year of professional experience as a communications or graphic designer.
• Professional knowledge and proven track record in professional use of Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign).
Desirable
• Demonstrated ability to professionally interact with and assist colleagues from the initial stages of a project through project completion.
• Excellent time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and apply branding guidelines consistently.
• Experience in identifying and managing external vendors in the areas of design, photo and video is considered a strong asset.
• Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
3) Language Requirements: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Portuguese or another UN official working language is an asset. Remuneration The successful candidate will be employed under a PSA contract.
UNU offers an attractive compensation package, including an annual net salary of EUR 22020 to EUR 26412, commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications.
Benefits include 30 days annual leave and a health insurance scheme.
Duration of contract
The duration of the initial contract is 1 year.
This is Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with UNU, with the possibility for renewal subject to requirements and satisfactory work performance.
