The Board of Directors of the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto Francisco Gentil, EPE (IPO Porto) opens a call for hiring one (1) Junior Researcher for research activities, in accordance with the applicable Regulations, under an unfixed-term contract for a period of 29 months, financed through the project "PAINLESS - Pain relief in palliative care of cancer using home-based neuromodulation and predictive biomarkers" (grant number 101057367, HORIZON-HLTH-2021-DISEASE-04).

2. Admission Requirements
Any national, foreign, or stateless candidate(s) that hold the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided, can apply:
Doctor's degree (PhD) in areas of Biomedical Sciences or related areas for more than 5 years, but up to 10 years.
Postgraduate training (e.g., master's degree, specific training course) in the field of Oncology or similar areas;
Participation as a member of the research team in national and/or international competitive funded projects in the field of oncology, cancer biomarkers and cancer and/or cancer treatment-related pain;
More than five years of experience in translational cancer research in the field of biomarkers discovery and validation in the context of cancer prognosis, follow-up and treatment;
At least 5 years of R&D activities, nested in a leading Oncology Center, in articulation with the clinical team;
At least 5 years of experience in project and lab management (including tendering procedures and lab risk management);
Previous experience in clinical and data management activities in the context of clinical studies in oncology, including patients' selection and recruitment, data management, collection and validation, data storing, and data analysis.
Any degree awarded by a foreign higher education institution must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution in accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of August 16, which approved the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4 (2) (e) of Decree-Law No. 60/2018 of August 3, and any formalities established therein be fulfilled up to the date of the contracting act.
3. Preferential Criteria
Robust profile of publications in indexed international journals;
Experience in team management and student academic supervision;
Participation in science communication and dissemination strategies;
Excellent command of English and scientific writing;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
4. Work Plan
The Junior Researcher will:
Coordinate patient selection, within specific WPs of the EU-funded project, by articulating efforts with the clinical and research team;
Develop data management activities within specific WP of the EU funded;
Prepare scientific reports, communications, and papers;
Elaborate strategies and participate in science communication and dissemination within and outside the research community.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations
Decree-Law nr 57/2016, from 29th August, altered by Law nr 57/2017, from 19th July, that approves a Doctoral Hiring regime to stimulate Scientific and Technological Employment in all knowledge areas (RJEC).
Portuguese Labor Law, approved by Law nr 7/2009, from 12th February in its current writing.
Regulatory Decree Nr 11-A / 2017, of 29th December.
6. Members of the Jury
According to article nr 13 from RJEC, the jury is composed by Rui Medeiros, PhD (president); Cláudia Vieira, PhD (1st member); Luís Lima, PhD (2nd member); Lúcio Lara Santos, PhD (1st supplementary member), PhD; and Ana Luísa Moura, PhD (2nd supplementary member).
7. Start Date and Workplace
The contract is expected to start on 2nd January 2025 for up to 29 months. The R&D activities will be developed at the Molecular Oncology and Viral Pathology Group of the Research Center (CI-IPOP), hosted at IPO Porto.
8. Monthly Remuneration
Gross monthly remuneration is 2,294.95€, corresponding to the 1st pay band of the Starting Level of the scientific research career in exclusivity regimen, in accordance with the predicted in articles 1 and 2 of Regulatory Decree Nr 11-A / 2017, of 29th December.
9. Application process
The call is open from 8th October 2024 until 22nd October 2024 (10 working days), and the application documents (indicated below) should be sent by e-mail (****** and *************), in PDF format, indicating the reference of the position in the subject (PI174-CI-IPOP-06-2023- PAINLESS-HORIZON-HLTH-2021-DISEASE-04_Inv Jun). In addition, the following documents must be attached to the email:
a) Copy of a Certificate or Doctoral Diploma;
b) Evidence of the admission requirements (point 2), alinea b), c), d), e), f) and g);
c) Detailed Curriculum Vitae;
d) Any other document that the applicants consider relevant for the assessment of their merit (optional).
Note: The non-compliance with these requirements determines the immediate rejection of the application.
10. Evaluation criteria:
The admitted applications will be evaluated taking into account the quality, timeliness, and relevance of the scientific path (scientific production and research experience) in accordance with the profile described above.
The jury will analyze the application documents according to the following criteria:
A) Detailed CV: List of scientific publications and respective impact factor (25%), research projects in which the candidate participated (10%), and research experience (25%), with emphasis in the areas indicated above. This criterion will have a valuation of 60% of the total, on a scale of 0 to 100.
B) Motivation letter: Interest and motivation for the research areas relevant for each position (20%), knowledge of English (10%), and written communication (10%). This criterion will have a valuation of 40% of the total, on a scale of 0 to 100.
The final classification will be presented in a percentage scale.
In accordance with Article 5 RJEC, the admitted candidates will be evaluated considering their scientific and curricular paths (SCP) (90%); and an interview (INT), if the jury deems necessary, can be held for a maximum of five candidates with the highest scores in the scientific and curricular paths evaluation (10%).
The interview, if held, is intended to clarify aspects related to the scientific curriculum and candidates' motivation for the open position.
After the evaluation of all admitted applications, the jury will write a meeting minute describing the whole process of recruitment, evaluation, and selection, including an ordered list of approved candidates and the final decision of the jury. The final decision of the jury shall be validated by the Board of Directors of IPO Porto, which is also responsible for deciding on hiring.
FC without interview = (10A*0.60 + 10B*0.40)
FC with interview = (SCP*0.9) + (INT*0.1)
The final classification will be presented in a percentage scale from 0 to 100%. In the event of a tie, the decision will be the responsibility of the chairman of the jury.
11. Results:
All candidates will be notified by email. Both admitted and excluded candidates list will be sent by email to all candidates.
12. Preliminary hearing and final decision deadline:
Pursuant to article 121 of the Administrative Procedure Code, after notified, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. The jury's final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 days, counting from the application deadline.
