We are looking for a passionate and resourceful PhD holder able to integrate into an organization that is developing innovative products and services to protect crops against pests and diseases.
The work will be done within a multi-disciplinary team comprised of biologists, bioinformaticians, data scientists, agronomists, and GIS specialists.
The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate a solid background in Statistics, ideally in the field of quantitative biology.
Main Responsibilities
Conduct statistical analysis of complex biological data generated in the lab/field and provide insights that guide ongoing research;
Support the development of appropriate experimental designs;
Develop short workshops on statistical methodologies and R programming, that empower team members to perform basic analyses independently;
Create user-friendly dashboards that automate routine data analysis processes;
Develop and support the implementation of data management strategies.
Specific Requirements
PhD in a field of the biological sciences, ideally in a quantitative field (e.g., biostatistics, bioinformatics);
Demonstrated experience in the analysis of biological data using statistical methods (e.g., hypothesis testing, ANOVA, generalized linear models);
Strong knowledge of R programming for data analysis, including literate programming with Rmarkdown;
Ability to develop and deliver educational workshops on statistics and data analysis tools;
Strong data management skills and experience handling large datasets;
Creative and independent, but also able to work as a member of a multidisciplinary, project-oriented team, with demonstrated problem-solving skills and flexibility;
Good written and spoken English (Portuguese is beneficial).
Ideal Requirements
Proven track record of supporting interdisciplinary research teams;
Experience with R Shiny for creating data dashboards for automating analysis workflows;
Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git);
Proficiency with Python and bash/unix scripting;
Familiarity with working in Unix/Linux environments;
Experience in the application of Artificial Intelligence to biological data;
Familiarity with spatial and temporal data analysis;
Familiarity with Bayesian statistics;
Knowledge of plant-microbe interactions.
Workplace
The work location will be at the headquarters of InnovPlantProtect in Elvas, situated in INIAV, at the former National Plant Breeding Station.
Salary and Contract
A full-time contract, expected to start on 2nd January 2025, will continue until 31st December 2025 with a trial period of one month. The contract may be renewed annually for a further one year depending on performance and further financial support. All the activities to be developed will be subject to confidentiality clauses. Gross remuneration will be €2,046.00/month (14 months – €28,644.00/year), plus €6 for daily lunch subsidy.
