Offer Description
Join the Bordeaux Population Health Center (BPH, U1219 Univ. Bordeaux – Inserm) at the University of Bordeaux, one of the leading population health research centers in France (with nearly 500 staff members).
We are recruiting a Biostatistician to contribute to the ORCHIDEE project : National Network of Hospitals Involved in Epidemiological Surveillance and Emergency Response.
About the ORCHIDEE Project:
Currently, France does not have a near real-time hospital surveillance system to monitor hospitalizations related to various infectious diseases, including severe acute respiratory infections (SARIs), or to measure the impact of emerging phenomena.
To address this, the ORCHIDEE project, coordinated by the French National Public Health Agency (Santé publique France), aims to develop a new scientific surveillance protocol and implement it across a national network of hospitals. This is achieved by leveraging hospital data warehouses.
Participating hospitals will collaborate on standardized scientific surveillance protocols and produce epidemiological indicators to be integrated into a national SARI surveillance system. These indicators will be regularly transmitted to Santé publique France, which will share information and interpretations with national and regional policymakers, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the general public.
The project also invests in infrastructure to implement this surveillance protocol in hospitals and train staff. Additionally, the proof-of-concept for surveillance will be expanded beyond SARIs to include other health events deemed essential by national and European public health authorities.
ORCHIDEE is a national project funded by the European Commission, involving 25 hospital teams across mainland France, the Antilles, and Réunion.
Your Role:
Integrated into the work package 2 team of the project and reporting to the coordinator, your activities will focus on two main areas:
Defining Evaluation Frameworks for Epidemiological Surveillance Using Hospital Information System Data:
Define the statistical evaluation methods for metrological performance using time-series data for monitoring respiratory infections (SARI and SARI severe cases). Tasks include:
Conducting a literature review on metrological characteristics relevant to epidemiological indicators (e.g., incidence/prevalence).
Identifying statistical methods to evaluate these characteristics, particularly those applicable to time-series modeling and prediction.
Developing a methodological framework and operational guidelines (validated through expert consensus) for measuring metrological characteristics.
Apply metrological performance methods to real-world health data by:
Performing statistical analyses on SARI indicators using data from participating hospitals.
Producing standardized reports on evaluation results (indicator datasheets and operational guidelines) and drafting a final evaluation protocol that can be generalized to other infectious diseases.
Contribute to defining the evaluation framework for developing surveillance indicators, including:
Defining and measuring indicators related to SARIs.
Drafting a final evaluation protocol for the development process of indicators that can be generalized to other infectious diseases.
Modeling Work for Routine Surveillance or Signal Detection:
Collaborate with research teams to conduct modeling work (regression, time-series, spatial models, compartmental models) in real-time or near real-time.
Participate in national working groups, present your work, and contribute to its dissemination (conferences, publications, etc.).
This position is part of a 3-year fixed-term contract linked to the achievement of qualitative and quantitative results, which will be assessed in particular through the production of scientific protocols and deliverables in line with the schedule.
