Offer Description
The European Synchrotron, the ESRF, is an international research centre based in Grenoble, France.
Through its innovative engineering, pioneering scientific vision and a strong commitment from its 700 staff members, the ESRF is recognised as one of the top research facilities worldwide. Its particle accelerator produces intense X-ray beams that are used by thousands of scientists each year for experiments in diverse fields such as biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics.
Supported by 21 countries, the ESRF is an equal opportunity employer and encourages diversity.
You will be strongly involved in the instrumental developments and maintenance of the beamlines ID15B and ID27. You will participate in ongoing in-house research programmes, the operation of the beamline, providing support to external users as local contact, and develop your own research programme.
Beamlines ID15B and ID27 are premier X-ray powder and single crystal diffraction stations primarily dedicated to research at extreme pressures and temperatures. The combination of high resolution XRD and advanced sample environments (Paris-Edinburgh large volume press, YAG and CO2 laser heating systems and helium-flow cryostat) open up many new possibilities in the study of matter at very high pressures and temperatures.
You will play a major role in the running and further development of the High-Pressure beamline and shall actively participate in the activities of the Matter at Extremes group.
User support will be a key activity which will provide much opportunity for collaborative work at the frontiers of the field. Beamtime will be set aside for in-house research and the Beamline Operation Manager will be given the opportunity to participate in the beamlines research programme in close collaboration with the beamline team.
Minimum Requirements
Advanced Degree : You possess a Master's degree or equivalent (300 ECTS) in Physics, Materials science or a related field. A PhD is highly valued.
Specialized Skills : Deep expertise in powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, as well as high-pressure techniques, is required.
Technical Experience : You bring at least 5 years of hands-on experience with Diamond Anvil Cells (DAC) in both low and high-temperature applications.
Beamline and Data Proficiency : Demonstrated experience with beamline alignment and operations, data acquisition and processing, and a strong foundation in electronics and/or programming.
Collaborative Mindset : Strong ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and facility users.
Language Skills : Proficiency in English, the working language at ESRF.
