Offer Description Assistant Researcher – Comparative Physiology and Endocrinology (M/F) - 1 Position Available

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) is opening a recruitment and selection process for one position for an Assistant Researcher in Comparative Physiology and Endocrinology. This position is open to citizens of any nationality, including stateless individuals, under a permanent employment contract to recruit and select the best candidate for activities within the Foundation for Science and Technology Tenure Program (FCT Tenure).
1. About CCMAR:
CCMAR ( https://ccmar.ualg.pt/ ) is one of Portugal's leading marine science research centres, rated Excellent in evaluations promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). With a multidisciplinary team, well-equipped facilities, and laboratories, CCMAR engages in core areas such as research, training, business, societal engagement, and collaboration.
2. Summary and Functions:
The research involves the maintenance and handling of teleosts and elasmobranchs under simulated future ocean acidification and warming conditions. The successful candidate will investigate the effects of these conditions on the neuronal system, focusing on olfactory perception and integration. Technologies used include electrophysiology (electro-olfactogram, electroencephalogram, and multiunit nerve recording), transcriptomics, and immunohistochemistry. The impact on fish health, virus susceptibility, and survival will be assessed. Additional duties include isolating olfactory feeding stimuli for aquaculture and developing artificial fishing baits.
The successful candidate will contribute to CCMAR's core missions by organizing dissemination actions, training students, and hosting international collaborations. They will also establish an electrophysiology service platform integrated into CCMAR's research infrastructure.

4. Start Date: The contract is expected to start in January 2025.
5. Workplace: Activities will occur at CCMAR (University of Algarve, Faro, Portugal) and other locations as necessary.
6. Working Hours: 35 hours per week.
7. Monthly Salary: The gross base monthly salary is €3,427.59 (Index 195).

9. Required Profile:
The selected candidate must have completed a PhD in Biology or a related field, have at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience, and have robust knowledge and hands-on experience in climate change research related to chemical ecology and olfactory disruption.
The candidate must have experience in maintaining and handling teleosts and elasmobranchs, including necessary permits for handling and experimenting with these animals.
The candidate must demonstrate expertise in in vivo electrophysiological recordings in fish, proficiency in molecular biology and immunohistochemistry.
The candidate must have experience with microelectrode and cell culture techniques, including neuronal cell line transfections and microelectrode-based intracellular recording methods.
The candidate must have a solid scientific track record, evidenced by an excellent publication record, leadership roles in research projects, and experience securing competitive research funding.
The candidate must have proven experience supervising MSc and PhD students and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of scientists.
High proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required.

Evaluation and Selection Process: The evaluation will consist of a curriculum assessment (final rating between 0-100). Admitted applications will be evaluated based on the scientific and curricular path, focusing on the relevance, quality, and up-to-dateness of the following criteria:
Scientific and technological production of the last five years (55%);
Applied or practice-based research activities developed in the last five years (20%);
Extension and dissemination activities developed in the last five years (4%);
Management activities in science, technology, and innovation programs (1%);
Motivation and Capacity for Innovation (20%).
The selection panel reserves the right to contact or interview candidates if additional information is needed. The evaluation is carried out through the assessment of the motivation letter, CV, and up to 5 articles chosen by the candidate.
